From ATTAHIRU AHMED, Gusau
The death toll of the recent Zamfara killings has risen to over 70. The dead included Chief Imam and village head of Kizara in the state. Also, no fewer than 1,000 people,
including children in the affected villages have taken refuge in neighbouring Magami village.
It was reported that gunmen stormed four villages in Tsafe Local Government Area of the state and killed scores of people in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Checks by Sunday Sun revealed that the affected villages include Kizara, Shemori, Danjibga and Keita where about 60 people were reportedly killed.
A survivor, who was taking refuge in nearby Magami town with his family said, “The hoodlums numbering about 100 first stormed Kizara village in the early hours of Tuesday and attacked the poor villagers with AK-47 rifles and killed many people, including the District Head of Kizara, Alhaji Bello Ibrahim, who was murdered in front of his wives and children.”
The chief imam of the village and chairman of the vigilante group in the village were among the dead. It was also gathered that at least 70 people were killed in the attack.
Sources told Sunday Sun that no fewer than 1,000 people, including children from the attacked villages were taking refuge in Magami, a nearby village.
It was also gathered that gunmen had attacked the villages in the past. “For several months, some criminals have made it a point of duty to ambush our women and children, especially on market days.
“Sometimes, they molest our women, but each time we lodged a complaint, the hoodlums would escape into the bush,” a source said.
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Lawal Abdullahi, said the Police Commissioner, Mr Usman Gwary, had visited the villages to assess the situation, while security personnel have been deployed to the troubled areas.
